What kind of substrates can HILO be applied to?
HILO can be applied over most surfaces except wallpaper. New or existing sheetrock, plaster paneling, brick and concrete may be covered.
How is HILO applied?
Hilo is applied to the wall as a wet mixture or “slurry,” using a trowel, in a continuous spreading pattern. Once dry, there are no unsightly seams, as with traditional wallpaper.
Is HILO considered a “green” product?
HILO has been certified by the Institute for Baubiologie in Rosenheim Germany. The IBR is considered the Gold Standard for testing safe and healthy building products.
What are HILO"s healthy and sustainable characteristics?
- Made from natural fibers and minerals: cotton, plant fibers, brass and other minerals.
- Plant-based cellulose adhesive, only water added to fiber mixture, no solvents are used.

HILO can be used in bathrooms as it absorbs and releases excess humidity without molding, turning soft, or peeling.
Does HILO have an NRC acoustic rating?
HILO has an acoustical rating of .32 in combination with gypsum board at 2.3mm.
Is HILO fire rated?
HILO has a Class A fire rating (tested according to ASTM E84) and can be applied in both residential and commercial applications.
Can HILO be repaired or removed?
HILO can be repaired and patched any time during it"s life using a simple process. It can be removed more easily than wallpaper. A new coat can also be applied right over the first one, and it can be painted over if desired.
Can HILO be customized?
HILO comes in three basic textures that can also be blended in various proportions depending on desired effect:
HILO can also be custom colored to match desired hue. Note that variations in color will occur with natural dyes and fibers. Effect materials including metallic mica flakes, natural grains, glitter, and fiber threads can be added to create surface interest.
