SECTION 12500 SHADE (LAMINATED ROLLER SHADES)

PART 1--GENERAL
  1. DESCRIPTION
    1. General: Provide operable shades in accordance with this document and plans.
    2. Related work specified elsewhere.
      1. Rough carpentry for wood blocking and support grounds.
      2. Miscellaneous metal for framing and reinforcing.
      3. Optional: Electrical power requirements and controls for motorized shades.
  2. QUALITY ASSURANCE
    1. Provide operable shades from a firm that has specialized in the fabrication and installation of such work for at least five (5) years in projects of similar size and scope.
    2. Provide operable shades as complete units produced by a single manufacturer, including the necessary mounting brackets, hardware, fittings, fastenings, and installation.
    3. Installation shall be performed by an authorized manufacturer's representative experienced in the installation and maintenance of such assemblies.
  3. STANDARDS
    1. Except as modified by governing codes and contract documents, comply with applicable provisions and recommendations of the following:
      1. When required by fire codes, fabrics shall be flame resistant in accordance with NFPA-701 test requirements.
      2. Flameproofing shall leave the fabric cleanable, dimensionally stable, and resistant to UV deterioration.
      3. Optional: All electrical components and systems shall be listed by the Underwriters Laboratories (), and all wiring shall be performed to National Electric Code (N.E.C.) standards.
  4. SUBMITTALS
    1. Manufacturer's Data: Submit specifications and operating and installation instructions for shades.
    2. Shop Drawings: Submit drawings for shades, including dimensioned plans seaming instructions, details, connections, anchorages, and the relation to adjacent construction.
    3. Samples: Submit 24 x 24-in. samples of fabrics(s) as specified and operable hardware with cut sheets.
    4. Maintenance Instructions: Submit manufacturer's printed instructions for cleaning and maintenance of the products.
    5. Optional: Submit wiring diagrams detailing the wiring for motorized operation, relays, low-voltage interfaces, and switch locations.
  5. PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
    1. Subcontractor shall not deliver the shades until room(s) containing shades are painted and ready for shade installation. Shades and components shall be protected from damage during delivery and installation.
  6. WARRANTY
    1. A written warranty agreeing to repair or replace hardware or fabric due to faulty material, workmanship or installation for a period of one (1) year.
PART 2--Product: Laminated Roller Shades
  1. MANUFACTURER
    1. General: Provided an operable shade unit as produced by one manufacturer. Products specified herein by proprietary designation are as manufactured by DFB Sales, Inc., telephone (718) 729-8310, and establish the quality standards required. Equivalent products of other manufacturers will be considered provided they meet those established standards and comply with the contract documents.
  2. FABRICATION
    Specifications for laminated roller shades consist of the following:
    1. Fabric shall be glued to vinyl blackout shadecloth and pressed to eliminate creases or bubbles. All exposed edges shall be bound with clear tape. If seams are required, they shall be overlapped and cut with no fraying of edges permitted.
    2. Adjustment-free system shall be provided that is controlled by a ball chain (90-LB. test). The clutch system shall be comprised of multibanded steel springs that create the pressure necessary to keep the shade in the desired position. The clutch shall develop no more than 1/2 lb. drag, for easy lift.
    3. Brackets: They shall be made from 16-gauge enameled galvanized steel capable of being mounted in any position. The clutch-end bracket shall have multi-channel chain control and a guide insert. The idle-end bracket shall have a means of leveling the shade after installation; the set screw adjustment shall provide infinite leveling degrees. Brackets are reversible for right- or left-hand installation. Bracket functions as a support for the fascia.
    4. Shade Mounting System: The tube shall be 1 1/2 in. O.D. extruded aluminum with .050 wall thickness. The tube shall incorporate an integral channel for affixing the shadeband to the tube via a spline.
    5. Hem/Hembar: The hembar shall be extruded aluminum weighting 1/4 lb. per linear foot and sit behind two thicknesses of shadecloth. The hem shall be triple thick with an electronically welded seam.
    6. Fascia (optional): A component feature that, if required, shall be .040-in.-thick extruded aluminum.
    7. Options: Trim can be added to the bottom which can be scalloped or have a key design.

PART 3--Execution
  1. EXAMINATION
    1. Examine substrates, adjoining construction and conditions under which the work is to be installed. The work shall not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
  2. PREPARATION
    1. Install shades with hardware in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
    2. Hang shades plumb and square, running up and down. Set appropriate stops, and leave in the open position.
    3. Shades shall be free of creases and wrinkles after hanging and shall be steamed and dressed down as required.
  3. PROTECTION
    Protect shades from soiling or damage after hanging.
